Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said:
Allah Almighty revealed in His Book about a people who are arrogant: Verily, when they are called “There is no god but Allah,” they are arrogant. Therefore, the word of piety was made obligatory and those who were more deserving and qualified for it were (the word of piety) “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” When the agreement was made with the polytheists, the polytheists were proud of this word.
